It’s very comfortable, sounds pretty good and works well with a variety of systems, but doesn’t offer anything special compared to headsets at comparable prices.
The design
If you recognize the Logitech G230 & G430, the G231 is the same design: a large headset with over-the-ear cups, a fancy headband, and a semi-flexible microphone that moves up and down. The ear glasses automatically rotate to accommodate the user’s ears, and can even be folded flat to make the headset more comfortable to transport.
It is a sweet and comfortable design but has since been followed up with more comfort, including a flexible headband from SteelSeries and more elegant mic storage from Logitech itself.
G231 is also quite simple in how to connect to the device. This wired headset is connected via a 3.5 mm jack, and that’s it. There is no optional USB adapter, no software, and no solid amplifier. The closest you can get is a small set of in-line controls, which can modify the audio volume and turn off the microphone. In theory, devices function just as well as computers, mobile devices, and game consoles (through their controllers).
Convenience

Game Performance
I run the G231 through our standard game battery, and it’s pretty solid. On Overwatch, I can hear my enemy clearly, and their footsteps and shots show the right direction. My team won a quick win – maybe not entirely because of G231, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.
Other genres work well with this headset. Both the mission dialogue and the sound of battle came clearly in StarCraft II, and Rise of the Tomb Raider echoed with falling ice and the murmur of bushes. In Marvel Heroes, the bad guys try to shout at Captain America and then feel a hard blow when their shields fly into their torso.
Although the audio is clear, it’s also rather flat. I didn’t hear a significant difference between game music, voice acting, and sound effects. You can’t expect original audio from a headset for $ 70, but a few subtle touches can help lift it.
Music performance
G231 provides a good voice for music. I listened to the Celtic punk outfit, Flogging Molly’s new single, “The Hand of John L. Sullivan,” and could hear everything clear, from the drumming to the accordion that was everywhere. Likewise, “Carry Me Back,” a number inspired by the Civil War from the Old Crow Medicine Show, sounds balanced, with the guitar, vocals, and mandolin all quite audible. The choice of G.F. Oratorio Handel’s “Messiah” seems fine, even though the soprano comes more clearly than their alto, tenor, and bass counterparts.
On Overwatch, I can hear my enemy clearly, and their footsteps and shots show the right direction.
However, the music doesn’t feel vibrant and varied in G231. The sound was not felt immediately, like watching a concert in a crowded theater. It feels more like I’m watching them on T.V. – one of the new ultrathin T.V.s that doesn’t have enough physical space for impressive loudspeakers.
The Point
If you dig into the design of the G231, consider the G230, which is almost identical and almost half the price. The SteelSeries Siberia 200 (formerly V3) headset features better sound and a much slimmer, more comfortable design, like the Kingston HyperX Cloud II, which costs only $ 15 more than the G231.
The Bad
